      • The LDM485 is a compact RS-232to RS-485 converter which featuresa complete electrical isolationbarrier and heavy duty electricalsurge protectors. These devicesfeature a rugged aluminumenclosure small enough to mount the back panel of typical computerequipment, saving valuable deskand floor space. Isolation isprovided by optical couplers and aDC-to-DC converter. The RS-232connection is through male orfemale EIA 25-pin connectors. TheRS-485 connections are madethrough convenient solderlessscrew terminals.

      The LDM485 series is designed forfull duplex operation over two-wirepairs. Outputs are tri-state, allowingmultidropping of up to 64 units.Hardware handshake is availableover two separate wire pairs. Datarates are DC to 57.6k baud. Sixdiagnostic LED indicators areprovided (see Figure 1) forinstallation guidance and systemtroubleshooting. The RS-232 interface supports Request ToSend, Clear To Send, Data SetReady, Received Line SignalDetect, and Data Terminal Ready.A convenient null modem switch isprovided for the data lines. Also, aline termination switch connects aline termination resistor and linebias resistors to the RS-485 receivelines. The RS-485 interfacesupports Request To Send andClear To Send on separate wirepairs. The LDM485 may be used toconvert two sets of send andreceive channels by using RTS andCTS circuits as the second datachannels. Data rates are the same.The units use 12VAC from awall-mounted transformer to screwterminals 1 and 2 on the RS-485connector. Alternately, they can use±12VDC to pins 9 (+) and 10 (–) ofthe RS-232 connector.

      The LDM485 conforms to EIARS-232 and RS-485 specifications.Data Terminal Ready must beasserted by the host RS-232 port before the LDM485 can transmitdata. When Data Terminal Ready isnot asserted, all outputs of theLDM485 are high impedance,allowing up to 64 LDM485 units tobe multidropped on a commoncommunications cable. See Figures1 and 3 for details.Request To Send and Clear ToSend are carried through theRS-485 port as two separate wirepairs. These may be used for fullduplex flow control.Data Terminal Ready, DTR, mustbe asserted before the LDM485 cantransmit data. This is normally doneby the host computer. For situationswhere the host equipment does nothave the capability of supplying aDTR signal, RLSD may be used toautomatically assert DTR. On theRS-232 connector P1 of eachLDM485, simply connect RLSDpin 8 to DTR pin 20. Thisconnection is not appropriate formulti-drop installations.
