      • The LDM422 is a compact RS-232to RS-422 converter which featuresa complete electrical isolationbarrier and heavy duty electricalsurge protectors. These devicesfeature a rugged aluminumenclosure small enough to mount onthe back panel of typical computer equipment, saving valuable deskand floor space. Isolation isprovided by optical couplers and aDC-to-DC converter. The RS-232connection is through male orfemale EIA 25-pin connectors.The RS422 connections are madethrough convenient solderlessscrew terminals.The LDM422 series is designed forfull duplex operation over two-wire pairs. Outputs are tri-state, allowingmultidropping of up to 32 units.Hardware handshake is availableover two separate wire pairs. Datarates are 75 to 19,200 baud.Six diagnostic LED indicators areprovided for installation guidanceand system troubleshooting. TheRS-232 interface supports RequestTo Send, Clear To Send, Data SetReady, Received Line SignalDetect, and Data Terminal Ready. A convenient null modem switch isprovided for the data lines. TheRS-422 interface supports RequestTo Send and Clear To Send onseparate wire pairs. The LDM422may be used to convert two sets ofsend and receive channels by usingRTS and CTS circuits as the seconddata channels. Data rates are thesame. The units use 12VAC from awall-mounted transformer or±12VDC to pins 9 (+) and 10 (–) ofthe RS-232 connector. The LDM422conforms to EIA RS-232 andRS-422 specifications. DataTerminal Ready must be assertedby the host RS-232 port before theLDM422 can transmit data. WhenData Terminal Ready is notasserted all outputs of the LDM422are high impedance, allowing up to32 LDM422 units to be multidroppedon a common communications cable.See Figure on page 2 for details.Request To Send and Clear ToSend are carried through theRS-422 port as two separate wirepairs. These may be used for fullduplex flow control.
